Trust me, I saw Star Wars this weekend. I’m not crazy. But there’s nothing I can add to the conversation by giving it my review (and honestly, you’ve definitely already seen it), so I took one for the team and went out to see the new Amy Poehler, Tina Fey film, SISTERS. You’re welcome?
As you can probably guess, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler play sisters in Sisters and they learn that their parents have decided to sell their childhood home. Devastated and furious, they throw one last crazy party to relive the glory days of high school and make a few more memories before letting it all go. My little synopsis you just read was actually way more interesting and endearing than the movie itself. Sisters isn’t much more than a party flick in the vein of Project X or Van Wilder: Freshman Year. So, if you’re into that, this movie might just be the one for you! However, if you’re expecting a laugh out loud comedy… maybe it’s not.
I think both Fey and Poehler are absolutely hilarious. I loved them in SNL. I love Mean Girls, Parks and Rec, and 30 Rock. I think they’re two genuinely funny individuals. I’m not sure what happened here. It wasn’t written by either of them, but based on their comedy and senses of humor, I expected to laugh much more. I really only chuckled once or twice. Neither of those chuckles came in the entire first hour of the movie, which seriously made me consider walking out of the theater.
The problem with reviewing a comedy is that what I find funny won’t be what you find funny and vice versa. But like I said, I consider myself a fan of these two women so it was really a disappointment that I could barely crack a smile throughout the two-hour disaster. That’s another thing; it’s way too long for the genre. Even if it were funny, no one wants to laugh for two hours, but it’s not funny so that makes it even worse. There were several occasions when I was certain it was going to end, but then it kept on going. Like The Return of the King, but with fewer emotions.
In all fairness, though, there are some good things about Sisters. John Cena has a small role as a beef head drug dealer and he’s easily the most hysterical part. There are quite a few SNL cast members involved and they all hold their own fairly well. Not to the mention, the actual party, which takes up almost the entire second act, is absolutely insane. Again, I’m not a big fan of party movies, but this seemed like it was probably a fun one. Other than that, though, the comedy was on the nose and vapid, it was difficult to care for the two sister’s struggles, and there was nothing particularly interesting or inventive about the story. If you’ve seen Star Wars and don’t feel like going to see it again… maybe try Alvin and the Chipmunks.
