Top 10 Halloween Movies to get you ready for the holiday!

It’s that time of the year again. When the temperature drops, you dress up in costumes, eat and drink pumpkin flavored everything, and watch Halloween movies. With Halloween only a few short weeks away, why not watch some Grade-A movies. These movies are sure to remind you what Halloween is all about! Here are 10 of the best films to get you ready for the scariest holiday of the year! I should mention these are opinion based and feel free to discuss your favorites in the comments.

Number 10: SinisterImage result for sinister

Maybe not the first movie that came to mind for Halloween but hear me out. This movie has a good story, a solid performance from Ethan Hawke, and all the jump scares you could want. Follow a washed up writer when he finds a film of murders that string back all the way to the 1960s and the implications it has on him and his family. The sequel is also good, but the first really gets the blood pumping.

Number 9: BeetlejuiceImage result for beetlejuice movie cover

Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice! Now before you leave because this isn’t higher just wait to see the rest of the list. What has become a classic for many reasons, this Tim Burton film follows a recently deceased couple. They don’t like the new family that just moved into their old house so they hire a bio-exorcist by the name of Beetle Juice. If you haven’t seen this movie you’ll want to see what transpires after he shows up.

Number 8: The Exorcist (1973)Image result for the exorcist movie cover

This movie still scares people even though it is over 40 years old. This is a phenomenal movie that must be seen by fans of scary movies, and what better time to watch a scary movie than Halloween. It is just a chilling movie to experience and to top that, there are an endless amount of other possession movies, but do not let this one go unwatched.  (Warning: You may sleep with a night light after viewing)

Number 7: Trick ‘R’ TreatImage result for trick r treat movie cover

The first movie on the list that actually occurs on Halloween night is a very interesting take on storytelling. This movie shows 5 different stories ranging from teenage boys, a principal, to a woman who loathes the holiday and a few others. Once all 5 stories have played out, you begin to see a connection that wraps the story up nicely.

Number 6: Ghostbusters (1984)Image result for ghostbusters movie cover

Not this summer’s remake, need I say more? The original Ghostbusters is filled with well-timed jokes, real costumes and props, and actual scary moments. Couple this with Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd and the rest of this cast, it is a great example of a family movie. The sequel is good in its own respect, but nothing tops the original. In 2011 a Ghostbusters game was made, which is a good addition to the franchise as well.

Number 5: The Blair Witch Project (1999)Image result for blair witch project movie cover

The movie that people thought was real upon release takes the #5 spot. Shot in point of view, it follows three college kids into the woods in October. All of the crazy stuff that unfolds is well worth the watch. In addition, the sequel is coming out soon so what better time to watch the movie.

Number 4: Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)Image result for nightmare on elm street 1984 movie cover

The birth of one of the most iconic movie serial killers ever has to be on the list. With numerous entries into this franchise, the one that began it all is my recommendation. Directed by Wes Craven, and Robert Englund as Freddy, it’s hard not to watch this movie during Halloween. The other movies in this series are great and worth the watch. Regardless of how good those movies may be, just watch Nightmare on Elm Street first. Just avoid sleeping after watching it, for safety reasons.

Number 3: Hocus Pocus Image result for hocus pocus movie cover

One for the whole family, and has become a tradition for many people. Hocus Pocus is filled with humor and is very lighthearted compared to some of the movies on this list. Follow the three kids and three witches in this great Halloween movie. Plus who said all Halloween movies have to be scary?

Number 2: Scream (1996)Image result for scream movie cover

The first movie to introduce Ghostface, who messes with his victims, kills them, you know the whole nine yards for serial killers. Follow the cast, try and solve the mystery of the killer, and hopefully make it through the night. This movie spawned three follow-up movies, and, to top it off, the “Scream Mask”, which is a staple for Halloween costumes now. Also directed by Wes Craven.

Number 1: Halloween (1978)Image result for halloween 1978 movie cover

One of the most terrifying and realistic scenarios on the list. Halloween, starring Michael Myers the serial killer psychopath, is back in town and well, it isn’t good for some people. The movie that spawned so many other serial killer movies it had to be #1. Plus it takes place on Halloween night. I mean it is the name of the movie! It was so well received it is responsible for 9 other movies with Michael Myers so if you like this one, I’m willing to bet you’ll like the rest of them!
